What the program and this website do with your data — and, mostly, what they do not do.

Last updated 21 September 2026. Covers WinScraper Pro 1.2.0 and this website.

The short version. WinScraper Pro runs on your own computer. Everything it collects from websites stays there: no page, no row and no file you scrape is ever sent to us. The program contacts us for one thing only — asking whether a newer version exists — and you can switch that off. This website counts visits with Google Analytics, which sets cookies; what it records is which pages were read, not who you are. We learn something about you personally only when you write to us or buy a licence.

Who we are

WinScraper Pro is sold by Silver Software UK, a trading name of Silver Software Ltd — registered in England and Wales, company number 12551103, registered office Office 403, Screenworks, 22 Highbury Grove, London N5 2ER, United Kingdom. Silver Software Ltd is the data controller for the handful of things described below. You can reach us at support@winscraper.com or on +44 (0) 7502 341059, Monday to Friday, 9am–6pm UK time.

The program on your computer

What never leaves your machine

The data your robots collect is written straight to files on your own disk — by default in Documents\WinScraperPro — as CSV, JSON or XML. The program has no mechanism for sending that data anywhere, and it does not contain any analytics, telemetry, usage statistics or crash reporting. If the program crashes it writes a file on your computer and shows you a message; nothing is uploaded.

The same is true of anything you type into a robot: addresses, search terms, and the sign-in details for the few robots that need an account. Those sign-in details are sent to the website you are signing in to, and to nobody else — never to us.

The one thing it does send

On start-up, at most once every twenty hours, the program asks our website whether a newer version exists. It is an ordinary request for one fixed file, https://winscraper.com/update/latest.json. It carries no licence key, no machine identifier and nothing about you — only the version you are running, as part of the standard identification string every program sends. As with any request to any website, our web host sees your IP address.

You can turn this off entirely in Settings → Check for updates on start-up. Nothing is downloaded or installed on its own: if an update exists, you decide whether to download it, and then whether to install it.

What it keeps on your computer

All of it lives in %APPDATA%\WinScraperPro (or beside the program in portable mode) and stays there when you uninstall, so a reinstall finds your licence and settings again. You can delete that folder at any time.

FileWhat is in it
settings.jsonYour preferences, and for each robot the last address or search term you used, the last row limit and the last output folder — in plain text.
credentials.jsonOnly written if you tick “remember”. The user name is stored as you typed it; the password is encrypted with Windows' own data protection, tied to your Windows account, so it cannot be read on another machine or by another user.
entitlement.datYour licence: edition, key, the machine identifier and the dates. Encrypted the same way.
history.jsonlOne line per run: which robot, the address or keyword you gave it, how many records, and where the files were written. Trimmed to the number of runs you set in Settings, and you can clear it from the History window.
Logs\The run log, saved automatically by default. It records the addresses visited. It does not record your passwords, and it does not record the values a robot collected.
Browser\The built-in browser's own profile: cookies and site data for the websites your robots visit, kept so that a sign-in survives between runs. Settings → Clear browser data deletes it, and turning off “keep cookies between runs” makes each run start with a throwaway profile.

Exported files and logs are ordinary files with no encryption. If what you scrape is sensitive, put it somewhere you control.

The machine identifier

A licence is tied to a computer by a short fingerprint: a one-way hash of your Windows machine GUID, the computer name and the system drive's serial number. The ingredients never leave your machine, and the fingerprint cannot be turned back into them. In the version we sell, licences are checked entirely on your computer, so the fingerprint is not sent anywhere either.

Consent banners

By default the program dismisses cookie and consent banners on the pages a robot opens, so the run is not blocked by them. Dismissing a banner is an action taken in your browser session, under your instruction; you can turn it off in Settings.

This website

  • We count visits with Google Analytics. It tells us how many people read each page, in which language, roughly where from, and which site sent them. We read it to decide what to write and what to build next. We do not use it to work out who you are, and we do not advertise to you.
  • It sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_LVE086D30B, which hold a random number so that Google's counting can tell a returning browser from a new one. They last up to two years, and clearing your cookies or browsing privately removes them.
  • What Google receives: the page you opened, the page that sent you, your browser and device type, your approximate location — worked out from your IP address, which Google Analytics does not store — and that random number. Google handles it for us under its own terms. You can switch it off for every website with Google's browser add-on, or by blocking these cookies.
  • No advertising pixels, no tracking beyond the above, and no web fonts.
  • One item of local storage: a single value named wsp-theme that remembers whether you chose the light or dark theme. It never leaves your browser.
  • One third-party request: the video still on the home page is loaded from YouTube's image host, so Google's servers see your IP address and browser details when that picture loads. The video player itself is only fetched — from youtube-nocookie.com — if you press play.
  • The contact form sends nothing to us directly. It opens your own mail program with the message ready, so you can see exactly what is sent, and you send it yourself.
  • Searching the robot catalogue happens in your browser. What you type is never transmitted.
  • Links out — our social accounts, our company site — fetch nothing until you click them.

Our web host necessarily processes the ordinary server-log information every website receives: your IP address, the page requested, the time and your browser's identification string.

When you buy

Payment is handled by Stripe. Pressing Buy Now takes you to a payment page hosted by Stripe; there is no payment form and no card field anywhere on our site, and we never see or store your card details. Stripe processes the payment as its own controller, under its privacy policy.

From the payment we learn the e-mail address you used, the amount and Stripe's own reference for the sale. We then send you a licence key by e-mail and record the sale in a file kept on our own computer: the date, your name or e-mail address as given at checkout, the key, its serial number and its expiry, if any. That record is how we can reissue a key you have lost and how we answer accounting questions; it is not shared with anyone and is not used to market anything to you.

The licence key itself contains nothing about you — only a format version, the edition, an expiry day count and a random serial number.

When you write to us

If you e-mail support@winscraper.com — for support, to ask for a download link, or anything else — we receive your address and whatever you write, and we keep the correspondence so we can follow it up.

How long we keep things

The record of issued licences is kept for as long as the licence can be used and for as long as UK accounting rules require us to keep records of a sale. Support correspondence is kept while it is useful for supporting you. Everything the program stores is on your own computer, under your control, for as long as you leave it there.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to our using it. Write to support@winscraper.com and we will answer within one month. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

We do not sell your data, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not make automated decisions about you.

Changes

If the program or the site starts doing something different with your data, this page changes with it, and the date at the top changes too.
